Sir,
I have the honour to advert to my
despatch No. 442 of the 16th October, 1931, on
the subject of the recent anti-Japanese riots and
to inform you with regret that the information
contained in its 10th paragraph was incorrect.
In eight cases of disorderly conduct or of
resisting lawful arrest the sentences included
corporal punishment, viz., in two cases twelve
strokes of the birch and in six cases twenty-four
strokes of the birch.

in all these cases there was evidence
of serious rioting accompanied by looting. раз
